It’s not unusual to feel a bit sore or stiff after a chiropractic appointment — especially if it was your first session or you’ve had ongoing issues for a while.
Here’s why that happens, what to expect, and when to follow up.
1. You’ve activated tissue that hasn’t been moving well
If you’ve been stiff, restricted, or compensating for pain, manual treatment can create movement in areas that haven’t moved properly in weeks — sometimes months. That can lead to post-treatment soreness, similar to what you might feel after a gym session.
2. Your nervous system is adapting
Chiropractic treatment doesn’t just affect joints and muscles — it also stimulates the nervous system. This can lead to temporary changes in sensitivity or muscle tone, which may feel strange at first but usually settles within a day or two.
3. Your body is responding to change
If you’ve had long-standing movement patterns, even positive change can feel uncomfortable. Soreness isn’t always a sign of harm — it’s often just your body adapting to a new input.

How long should soreness last?
Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is common
Pain that gets worse over time is not
